2008 BEDC Annual Conference
Thirty years ago – September 14, 1978 -- biotech was born in San Diego. And in that relatively short period of time it has surged– third only behind San Francisco’s and Boston’s biotech hubs. At this year’s BEDC conference we will explore the past, present and exciting future of biotech  in our own back yard.

Kicking off the conference will be Ted Greene, the original CEO of San Diego’s first biotech company, Hybritech. An entrepreneur, Ted has participated in the founding and/or management of numerous life sciences companies, including Amylin. In this session, Ted will reflect on biotech’s roots in San Diego and give his perspective on what the future holds.

Also joining will be Gaylene Xanathopoulos, President and Founder of The Leadership Edge, and Victoria Tucker, CEO of Zero Boundary, in a panel moderated by  Mary Glanville. In this panel discussion participants will share how the changing landscape of the biotech industry will impact not only the future workforce, but how we as HR professionals will need to adapt to meet the demands of the changing environment.

And speaking of change and the next generation of workers - Jeff Clark, CEO of Beaker.com, will explore the traditional recruitment strategies and how they are evolving into today’s social networking, communities of practice and online communities in the life sciences industry. Faced with a new wave of the Internet, Web 2.0, HR professionals will need to know how job candidates are using this media to further their careers.

Finally, Laney Beres of Compensia will present a strategic glimpse of compensation and benefits trends for our industry and tie to the results of the 2008 BEDC survey.

So please join us on October 7, from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Ardea Biosciences. Registration closes on September 23, so sign up early. We hope to see you there! See our Meetings page for all of the details.

The first BEDC Management Development Academy
We are receiving very positive feedback and participants are finding the workshops practical, informative, and interesting with a mix of lecture, activity and small group discussions. They are also given the opportunity to bring situations from their current roles to the workshops where they can immediately apply their new skills. We are now accepting enrollment for the Fall Management Development Academy which begins on September 9, 2008. Individuals may register on-line with a credit card at: www.OECStrategicSolutions.com. We hope your company will take advantage of this customized skill building academy provided to you through the Biotechnology Education Development Coalition. For any questions or if your company prefers to be invoiced, contact Pam Gleason at pgleason@OECStrategicSolutions.com or (858) 735-9226.

BEDC Compensation and Benefits Survey
We are soliciting your organization to participate in our 2008 BEDC Compensation and Benefits Survey (benefits conducted bi-annually). Members: for planning purposes, please email and let us know if your organization will be able to participate in this survey.

The BEDC is a not-for-profit organization serving the San Diego biopharmaceutical community. In particular, the BEDC provides resources, training, conferences and networking opportunities regarding the human resources of biopharmaceutical companies.

The San Diego BEDC Compensation and Benefits Survey consists of market data for approximately 180 benchmark positions and a general compensation practices portion which includes past and future salary budgets. Every other year, including this year in 2008, there is a benefits practice portion. Last year, there were ~100 participating organizations, with more than half having less than 100 employees and also more than half being privately funded. In addition, we have made improvements to the survey, including redesigning the Benefits section.

Key Survey Dates

  • Survey data and fees ($400) are due July 11
  • Release data results August 29
