Services

In addition to development activities for members, the BEDC takes an active role in providing many services for member companies who wish to participate.

Student Internships and College Scholarships
Many BEDC member companies, in partnership with BIOCOM, provide graduating college-bound high school and undergraduate college students the opportunity to participate in internships each summer. These opportunities provide further awareness of careers in the biotech industry and give students practical, hands-on work experience in their field of interest. In addition, the BEDC awards college scholarships to motivated students pursuing education and careers in the sciences. Scholarship applicants must have a current/summer internship at a BEDC member biotech company and be a San Diego resident. For additional information about our intern and scholarship programs, contact Steve Zug, Neurocrine Biosciences, szug@neurocrine.com or Mary Glanville, Anadys Pharmaceuticals, myaroshevsky@anadyspharma.com.

Salary Survey
The BEDC sponsors an annual salary survey of San Diego biotechnology companies. Included in the survey are approximately 180 benchmark positions for Research, Development, Manufacturing, Clinical/Regulatory, Marketing & Sales and Administration; additionally, we report compensation and benefit practices, as well as BOD compensation practices, executive pay and equity information. Survey data is available only to participating companies, which amount to approximately 100 organizations.
Key Survey Dates:

  • Training for Survey data submission (not required) June 9 – 8:00am at Neurocrine
  • Survey data and fees ($400) are due July 6
  • Release data results August 31
  • Training for Survey usage and market trends September 19 (annual BEDC conference)

Laney Beres, who is with the compensation consulting firm Compensia (former founders of iQuantic), is the primary contact for the survey. Laney has over 15 years of consulting experience, providing compensation consulting and custom survey services for many clients in the Life Sciences industry. If you are interested in participating, contact Laney Beres at lberes@compensia.com or (858) 729-0476; or Lisa Kanetake, BEDC Committee Chair at lkanetake@ardeabiosciences.com or (858) 442-9224.

Annual Human Resources Conference
The BEDC sponsors an annual conference for biotech HR professionals each spring. The conference has become a popular place for HR professionals to improve their skills and catch up on HR trends.
